Adam Piers: A Change of Mind Part 1

Many years ago, a black cloud followed him around.
It was impossible for him to feel any sort of emotion, or exhibit any form of emotion.
The black cloud engulfed him in every way possible, strangling him with each breath he took.
As he was walking across an old secluded forest, he found it hard to walk straight, stumbling on branches and sticks that crossed his path.
He saw a tree branch ahead of him and decided to run towards it, hopeing to hop over it...an obstacle blocking his path.
He jumped, his feet hit the ground with a thud. An unnatural feeling of satisfaction and thrill began to rise in him. Before the corners of his mouth could even pull up to a smile, his feet gave up underneath him, the ground crumbled away and he fell into the dark abyss.
***
He woke up disoriented and wary. He looked up and found himself in a warm bed, with a wet towel over his head. His eyes gazed around the room slowly, eyeing the fireplace by the corner of the wall, a small mahogany colored table in the center of the room with fresh baked bread, and lastly a small slender girl with long blond waves by the stove. He looked over to his left and saw the door, contemplating whether he should leave without a disturbance.
He got up and slowly walked over to the door, and almost collapsed from the dizziness.
"I wouldn't leave if I were you. You haven't eaten for 3 days and I bet you're not feeling so great are ya?" A loud yet gentle voice spoke.
The girl turned to face him, her eyes a beautiful shade of green. Her pink lips lifted into a smile.
"Come sit sir, I baked fresh bread and I made onion soup."
He looked at her hesitantly, but stumbled towards the table, and sat down on the chair.
Her smile grew, and she quickly went to fetch him a bowl.
"So..sir, what is your name?" She placed a big bowl in front of him and handed him a spoon.
The smell of the onion soup teared away at his stomach, he took a timid sip and was surprised by how delicious it tasted. He reached for a bread and began to eat, forgetting about her question.
She watched patiently, thrilled by his sudden hunger for her food.
She observed his attire, the torn dirty jeans, and ripped shirt. His gloves was cut so that no cloth covered his fingers. His nails was filled with dirt underneath like he hasn't showered for days. But she did not care. As she gazed at his face, she saw the scars and knew he had a hard life. He had long beautiful lashes and striking hazel eyes, the mesh of light brown and dark green. His face had a few sprinkle of freckles and his dark brown hair messily hung around his face. I wonder if anyone has ever looked at him the way I have, she thought to herself.
His eyes looked up towards her, she stared back with a lump in her throat.
"So..you never told me your name.." She spoke, taking the bowl from him.
"Neither have you. Thanks for the food." He replied. His voice was strong and confident, but it didn't suit his appearance.
"My name is Jade Evergreen. And yours?" She moved to sit next to him, her hands placed lightly on the table.
"Adam Piers." The color Jade even matches her eyes, he thought to himself.
"Well Adam, it is very nice to meet you."
"Likewise" He said curtly. He slowly got up, testing his balance, but no wave of dizziness came about.
He bowed slightly. "Thank you for your hospitality. I must go."
Jade got up suddenly, her hands on her hips.
"Where are you going? You don't look so great. You can stay as long as you like.." Her big green eyes stared back at him innocently, and he knew that she must be a kind girl with no history of distress or damage. Adam did not want to be the first one to embark that on her life.
"I'm sorry, I can't. I have somewhere to be. Thank you for everything.." Adam got up and slowly headed to the door, pausing slightly to look back at her. He closed the door behind him and began to walk further into the dark forest, not sure where he was going.
"Adam!"
He turned around and saw her standing by the door.
"If you..ever change my mind. You're welcome to come back Adam." Jade smiled one last time and went back inside.
He had a weird feeling in his stomach and he kept trying to shake it off. He couldn't figure out what exactly he was feeling, because he never felt like this before. Thinking it was just the presence of the girl and her beauty, he shook off the feeling and walked towards the darkness, where he belonged.
***
The fire was burning brightly, warming up his fingers as the night grew colder. He cuddled towards the fire and heard the sounds of hooves hitting the ground. The noise was drawing nearer and he quickly blew out the fire, running for cover. Two pair of horses pulled up to where he was sitting earlier. One of the guys sitting on the horse jumped off and looked at the smoke.
"Fire...someone must have blew it out not too long ago. Keep going this way, we'll probably find some sort of shelter." The man was wearing all black, with a long knife on his belt. The other man sitting next to him was dressed in the same attire, carrying the same weapon.
"What do we do when we find shelter and there is people in there?"
"We kill them and hide the bodies. We can't risk any sort of trail remember? Come on this way." They dug their heels on the side of the horse and the horses began to move.
Adam frowned slightly, watching them leave. He decided he was just going to forget what he saw and started heading back to find another location. He stopped suddenly, realizing that the only shelter they would find around here, would be Jades. He quickly bolted towards her house, realizing that the guys went south instead of east but would eventually find Jade's house at some point. He ran as fast as he could and hammered on the door with tremendous force. There was no answer.
He hammered his fist harder, a feeling of panic ran through him. He shook off the unfamiliar feeling. Again there was no answer. Finally he stepped back and kicked the door with his foot. The door's hinges loosened and broke open. He quickly ran inside to see no sign of Jade.
"Jade? Hey Jade!" Adam looked around the house, looking in the bathroom and bedroom. There was no sign of her.
Maybe she went out for a walk he thought to himself. Or maybe, they got her...but there's no blood.
"Jade!" He yelled again. "It's Adam, Adam Piers.." He looked around once more and saw one of the cabinets slowly open. A small girl with blond waves came out, looking frightened.
"Adam? Did you break down my door?" Adam rushed towards her, grabbing her by the wrist. She pulled back instinctively.
"What are you doing? Let go of me.." Her green eyes looked at him with fear.
"Listen..listen Jade. I'm not here to hurt you. I'm here because I saw some guys on horses wandering around looking for shelter. And as I was leaving, I didn't see any other houses, so the closest house would have been yours. And they could be here any minute, so I want you to leave because they will kill you. They said it themselves. So I dont care if you come with me, or if you get your things and go your own way. As long as your out of here.." Adam explained quickly, looking right at her.
She nodded her head. "okay..okay...I'll go. Are you sure?"
"Yes, I wouldn't lie to you." Adam said.
Jade slowly nodded her head and went to grab some things.
As Adam was waiting for her, the familiar sound of hooves was drawing nearer. He ran to the door and saw two figures.
"Jade!" Adam yelled.
He ran into the bedroom and grabbed her again.
"We need to leave now.."
"But-"
"No buts, they're here Jade, I'm serious. We must go. Is there a back door?" Jade eyes filled with frightened tears. She shook his head.
"Damn it." He could hear the horses by the door and sound of voices outside. He grabbed Jade and looked for somewhere to hide her. He saw a tall hamper filled with clothes. He grabbed it and threw the clothes in the closet and put the hamper back in place. Picking her up carefully, he dropped her in the hamper closing it and moving it out of view behind a cabinet. He looked around for somewhere to hide and all he could see was the bed. He quickly dropped to his knees and slid underneath, hoping the two men would not look under the bed.
Footsteps echoed around the house.
"I don't see anybody Johnathon. They must have left to get some wood for the fire or something." One of guys said.
"No..can't be right. The door is broken which means somebody got here before us or someone knew we were coming." The footsteps drew nearer to the bedroom and he could see the dirty black leather boots. Adam held his breath.
"The fire..someone must have heard us coming and blew out the fire and hid so we couldn't see them. They heard our conversation and probably went to warn people." Johnathon continued on.
"Huh, when did you become the detective John?" His partner said jokingly.
"Shut it Bane. I think we have company..somewhere in this house."
Adam could hear the men move things around, his hands started to shake. Their footsteps grew closer and he could see them by the cabinets where Jade was hiding. He prayed they would disregard the hamper.
"Hey John look, there's a hamper." Bane points out.
"Good for you Bane, that's correct, that is a hamper. Open it if you're so profounded by it." John kept sifting though the cabinets.
Adam watched Bane with hawk-like eyes. He could picture Jade's frightened face, and he couldn't wait any longer. He quickly slid out under the bed and stood up before Bane could open the hamper.
"Hey!"
Bane and John turned around, their hands by their weapon in defense.
"Where the hell did you come from?" Bane spat out, surprised. John stepped forward. He had black curly hair tied in a small ponytail, and penetrating dark brown eyes. He looked about thirty with a few wrinkles on his olive colored skin.
"What is your name son?" John said nicely.
"None of your business." Adam replied, his expression blank.
"I'm asking nicely, I'm not going to hurt you.." John tried again, with a small smile.
"Bullshit. I heard what you said to that guy...Bane is it? You're here to kill." Adam's hand shook slightly, but his voice came out sure and confident. He was actually a little surprised.
"Kill? Hah!" John laughed. "So that was your fire.."
John walked slowly back and forth, his hand still at his weapon.
"And you must have heard what I said bout killing. Well...son, is this your house?" John smiled, knowing the answer.
"Don't call me son."
"If this is not your house, then there is no need for me to kill you. All you have to do is leave." John said. "However, if there is someone in this house right now, that you somehow have that need to protect, you tell me now and I will let you both go unharmed."
Adam stared back at him, looking for any sign of dishonesty.
"How do I know you'll stand by your word?"
"I give you my word.." John's hand dropped from his weapon and reached out towards him.
"And your partner?" Adam looked over towards Bane.
His short dirty blond hair and shaved face made him look in his late twenties. He smiled, and winked.
"I give you my word."
Adam reached to shake the mans hand. As soon as his hand made contact, Adam saw in the corner of his eye, Bane's hand slowly reaching for his knife, and soon everything was a blur. Adam pulled John towards him with such force that John was pulled forward. Adam punched him with his free arm, while he held on to John's hand with his other. Bane grabbed Adam from behind and pulled Adams hand free from his partners. He grabbed Adams arms and held him so that Adam was struggling to free his arms from behind him. John looked at Adam and laughed.
"Do you honestly believe you can beat the both of us? Brave but stupid kid." John backhanded Adam hard. Adam grunted in pain, his lip cut from the force.
"Now who are you trying to protect huh? A family member? Friend? Girlfriend?" John asked, smiling. "It's a girl isn't it?"
Adam glared at him, not saying anything. John hit him again and Adam yelled out in pain.
***
Jade could hear the men talking as they were only a few feet away. She carefully opened the hamper an inch so she could see what was going on. She knew they were hurting Adam and she wasn't sure how long she could stay hidden while Adam was getting beaten. She peeked and saw a blond haired man holding Adam arms, so that he was immobile. The back of a tall dark haired man stood infront of Adam. She saw him take out a sharp knife.
"Where's the girl?" John asked, pointing the knife on Adam's cheek.
"There's no girl." Adam replied.
The knife dug deep into Adam's face, cutting his skin. He gasped in pain.
"Don't make me ask you again, or it's going to get a lot worse." John pointed the knife towards Adam's shoulder.
"Where is the girl?" John asked again, his tone cold.
"Fuck you." Adam replied,
Jade was filled with sudden emotion as she realized that Adam was protecting her, and would possibly die for her. She knew she could not wait any longer. She had to act soon, because she couldn't let this boy die for her. Hell, she suddenly had this feeling that she would die for him too. Her heart hammered fast in her chest.
***
Adam could feel the tip of the knife on his left shoulder. He knew John wasn't trying to kill him, yet, but to cause him enough pain to fess up. Too bad, he was not going to get any answers.
John shook his head "So be it, this hurts you more than me kid." John gripped Adam's neck to stable him as he slowly pressed the knife into Adam's shoulder.
Adam gritted his teeth in pain, trying to muffle his screams. He knew John would push the knife in as slow as possible to feel every tendon and muscle rip from the blade of the knife. He could no longer take it and screamed out in pain.
"STOP!" A voice yelled out.
John turned around and Adam looked up to see Jade standing a few feet away. Her eyes were filled with unshed tears.
"Well well, look at that." John smiled, his hand still on the handle of the knife.
"Jade..no...run. RUN!" Adam yelled. John shoved the knife in deeper to shut Adam up. He yelled out in pain.
"I said stop!" Jade stepped forward.
"Oh I apologize, I couldn't help it." John smiled and pulled the knife out, bringing another scream from Adam.
"So..Jade is it? This is your home?"
Jade nodded.
"Well, how unfortunate. Since your boyfriend would not cooperate, I unfortunately have no choice but to kill the both of you. I would have let both of you free, but it's too late." John stepped towards Jade and Adam reacted by elbowing Bane in the face. Bane bent over, holding his face in surprise. Adam punched him repeatedly until John grabbed Adam from behind. Bane was still on the floor disoriented as John threw Adam against the wall. Adam shook off the impact and got to his feet. He charged at John, punching and kicking every part of his body. John blocked most of his attacks, and shoved Adam to the ground, punching him until Adam began to lose unconciousness. Two pairs of hands circled around Adam's throat, and pressed hard against his trachea. He gasped for air, and tried to pull John's hand away to relieve some of the pressure. He could feel a numbing feeling take over his body, as his vision faded in and out. Suddenly the hands were off his neck and he coughed, gasping for air. He looked around to see Jade holding a lamp in her hand, and John unconcious on the floor.
He slowly got up and slowly grabbed the lamp from Jade's trembling hands. He slowly put it on the ground and walked over to Bane and saw him unconcious as well.
"Did you attack both of them?"
Jade nodded, still shaking. Adam pulled her into a hug and held her until she stopped shaking. He kissed the top of her head, and felt this overwhelming feeling of love and protection for this small girl. Her big green eyes stared back at his and he knew she felt the same way about him.
"Lets get out of here okay?" Jade smiled and nodded.
Adam grabbed her hand and they ran out of the door, hand in hand.
For the first time, he no longer felt alone.
